Description
West Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, or Guinea, Dan peoples, ca. 1925 CE. A dramatic example of a "mask" (made to be worn atop the head rather than over the face), with the classic Dan features of a high, domed forehead, a concave face, and protruding cheekbones. Most prominent, however, is the enormous, curving nose. In Dan culture, masks like these are inhabited by spirits during ritual dances and are kept safe in sacred huts. Size: 6" W x 11.25" H (15.2 cm x 28.6 cm)
