Description
Pair of Unusual Northern European Neoclassical Giltwood and Marble-Top Side tables, late 18th century, each with a thick rectangular marble top above a scroll, anthemion- and shell-carved frieze emanating from a lotus-form standard terminating in claw feet on a paneled and molded plinth base, h. 36", w. 34", d. 12-1/2".
Condition
In good restored condition. The gilt surfaces largely over-painted, and exhibiting some scattered minor losses to the gilt and gesso. The thick marble tops are later, and in near-pristine condition. The top beneath the marble exhibits some inset metal plates, and cut-outs for additional ones, suggesting the piece was once configured differently. The vertical section of the base appears to be later, but with age. Some scattered insect damage visible on the backs.
