Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Nicoya culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A hollow, molded pottery figure of a pregnant woman, with hands out at her sides, a detailed face, and a huge forehaed and head; her body and head are painted with reds, blacks, creams, and a color that has faded to a dusky purple. Designs go fully around the three-dimensional body. The navel is strongly emphasized. The heavy painting all over the woman's body may indicate tattooing or scarification patterns that were common in real life, and almost certainly had symbolic meaning to the audience it was created for, the Nicoya people. Size: 3.2" W x 5.3" H (8.1 cm x 13.5 cm)
