Description
Yasuo Kuniyoshi [par/imputee] (Japanese/American, 1893 - 1953). "Still Life with Goblet and Flowerpots". Oil on board. 1949. Bears signature and dated upper right, recto. Apparently the original frame, dimensions 26" x 30." Overall condition is very good, with only minor chipping and flaking of paint. No repairs or in-painting, probably never conserved. Signature and date contemporaneous to the work itself. Ex-collection member of the Board of Directors, Woodstock School of Art, Woodstock, New York, where Kuniyoshi studied and taught from the 1920s until his death. By 1927 Kuniyoshi's oeuvre had turned more toward a representational approach, featuring groupings of objects, and his still lifes of common objects are among his most sought after and recognized works. In our example, painted near the end of his life, Kuniyoshi continues to experiment, in this case with transparency in the glass goblet and the smoothness of his subjects, unlike some of his earlier "rough-edged" objects. He contrasts this with the solid ceramic flowerpots, this offset by the lushness of the drapery and the soft, muted colors. Image copyright Visual Artists and Galleries Association (VAGA). Image size: 20 x 24 in. (508 x 610 mm). [23422] |4000| {R100} (TL10) rzzz~tzzzz
