Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This is a large hollow pottery female figure from the West Mexican shaft tomb tradition. The figure is a woman with a very long face that is leaning on her knee. She wears a shirt and elaborate earrings with smooth hair that seems at one time to have been painted a creamy white. One hand is on her stomach and the other is on her knee, beside her head. Red, orange, and cream slip provide details to her body and clothing, suggesting she may have had tattoos or ritual scars. The figure is posed in a "pensador" pose, a thinker, but what that pose actually meant to the people of ancient West Mexico is not known. Size: 7.75" L x 7" W x 11.2" H (19.7 cm x 17.8 cm x 28.4 cm)
