Description
Chinese, 19th century Qing Dynasty or earlier. A finely carved and lacquered wood figure of warrior or guard depicting the man standing in full length atop a conforming base and wearing intricately carved armor, holding an idol or icon in one hand near waist, and proper right hand holding a mudra, possibly kartarimukha, with remnants of red and black lacquer throughout to the oxidized wood surface. The figure's back hollowed out possibly for mounting. Unmarked aside from a 20th century handwritten label to back of base "Ming Dynasty wood carving of guardian. Traces of red lacquer and gilt". Approximate height 10.5", width 5", depth 3".
