Description
65. Lapis Lazuli Dress Cane-Ca. 1900-Plain Lapis Lazuli ball knob and its metal collar on a fine grained rosewood shaft and a horn ferrule. The blue color of the ball with lots of golden dust and few whitish tufts give it the appearance of a sidereal globe with sparkling stars and clouds and make of it a heaven of a cane. For additional explanations on lapis lazuli see #20 in this catalog.-Lapis lazuli was always highly prized: In Mesopotamia this blue stone symbolized the heavens and so was used to decorate the ceilings of temples. In Egypt it was used to adorn statues of the gods, while in Europe, viewed as a cure for melancholy and fever, it was reserved for the very wealthy people and one of Faberge’s favorite precious stones.-H. 1 ¾” Diameter, O.L. 37 ½”-$400-$500
