Description
Africa, Nigeria, Edo (Bini) peoples, early 20th century CE. This is a hand carved wood mask from the Edo peoples of Nigeria, the descendants of the founders of the Benin Empire, in south and mid-western Nigeria. The mask has a pronounced forehead and small face beneath the forehead, with a crown and top knot of hair above. A mask like this would have been worn in the Nkporo Ifugo masquerade along with a colorful and elaborate costume. Size: 7" W x 12.75" H (17.8 cm x 32.4 cm)
