Description
Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A pretty hollow mold made pottery statuette of a lion. It appears as if there was once a goddess or some other figure seated atop the lion; the lower legs wearing robes are still present. This may have been Cybele, the Magna Mater ("Great Mother"), often shown attended to by a lion. The lion stands atop a rectangular pedestal. This statuette may be a copy of a larger bronze statue found in Roman public life, purchased to be an ornament in a home; it may also have been used a votive offering in a temple. Size: 4.1" L x 1.45" W x 3.85" H (10.4 cm x 3.7 cm x 9.8 cm)
