Description
19th century Grand Tour cast Bronze sculpture titled 'The Dying Gaul'. In depiction of a fallen Celtic tribesman , who once inhabited the region of Western Europe. The defeated warrior has laid down his arms and draws his finals breaths atop his shield. After the lost Hellenistic period sculpture thought to be commissioned between 230 - 220 BC by Attalus I of Pergamon. Rumored to be originally cast by Epigonus, the chief among the court of sculptors in Attalid dynasty. Other copy examples can be found in the Museum of Classical Archaeology at Cambridge University, The Leinster House in Dublin Ireland, and The Royal Academy in London. Cast signature "A. Messina. Roma" at the side of base. Mounted atop an oblong Red marble plinth. Measures approx. 11" H x 23" L x 10-1/2" W. Will not ship, we can refer local shippers.
