Item Details
Description
19th century AD. A rectangular wooden icon of 'Guardian Angel' (?????-X????????) with tempera painted face and hands, silver riza with legend to the lower border, stamped to the edge, loop above. 9.82 grams, 54 x 42mm (2 1/4 x 1 3/4"). From a Russian art collector, London, UK, before 1995. A guardian angel is an angel that is assigned to protect and guide a particular person, group, kingdom, or country. The guardian angel concept is clearly present in the Old Testament, and its development is well marked. The Old Testament conceived of God's angels as his ministers who carried out his behests, and who were at times given special commissions, regarding men and mundane affairs. Belief in both the East and the West is that guardian angels serve to protect whichever person God assigns them to, and present prayer to God on that person's behalf. Guardian angels were often considered to be matched by a personal demon who countered the angel's efforts, a belief was especially in popular medieval times.
