Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima & Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 200 CE. A trio of flat pottery figures with applied pottery coils and incised lines for designs. Two Colima Autlan figures appear to be dancers or musicians, with one's mouth open in what could be interpreted as singing. The third is a Chupicuaro "pretty lady" as they were called by the (largely male) scholars and collectors of the early twentieth century, with female genitals, a stylized face, and elaborate hair. These flat figures are a signature artwork of the Chupicuaro people, although their purpose - aside from being placed in graves - is not known.Size of largest: 2.9" W x 6" H (7.4 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Brand Collection, Pennsylvania
