Etruria, central Italy, ca. 600 to 400 BCE. This is a terracotta bust in the classic Etrurian (and Magna Graecian, and later, Roman) style showing a youth's head framed on round, flat background. The youth's face is framed by his wavy hair. Unlike later in Rome, where heads like these were individually sculpted, these Etrurian ones were molded and probably did not represent individuals. The fine features here are really a work of art, with incredible lifelike details, especially on the nose and shape of face. The eyes probably at one point were painted or had some kind of inlay. As today, youth was idealized, and unmarred facial features represented strength and innocence; this is a hopeful portrait. Size: 8" W x 9.1" H (20.3 cm x 23.1 cm)
