Description
A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE WILLIAM IV GILT AND PATINATED BRONZE FIGURAL CENTER PIECE CANDELABRA BY T. B. WHITFIELD, CIRCA 1830. Modeled as two playful putti supporting a seven scroll form candle arms with extending foliate mounts, each terminating with a sculpted Rococo candle socket insert and bobeche and resting on a leaf form base held by two Neo-classic figures of a young man and woman, one on a rockery pedestal the other seated on a barrel form and further raised on a naturalistic leaf form supported by large scrolled acanthus feet, the underneath of barrel inscribed “PUBLISHED AS THE ACT DIRECTS DEC. 23 1830 BY T. B. WHITFIELD NO. 100”. Height 34 inches (86.5 cm).

Catalog Note: T. B. Whitfield was a metalworker recorded in Birmingham between 1818 to 1831. He produced a large array of household goods and decorative items. Another example of his work, also with a nautical theme, a dolphin-form chamber stick, is illustrated by Roderick butler, A Study Collection of Marked Domestic Brass and Other Base Metalware c. 1600-c. 1900, Honiton, 2001, p.93.
