Description

J.W. Benson 19th c. Sterling Silver "Ludgate" Large, Size 22, Pocket Watch. Case with hallmark for Sterling Silver, London and the date mark for 1891. The movement engraved THE LUDGATE, J.W. Bensen, patent No 4658, best London make, By Warrent to H.M. The Queen, Ludgate Hill, London. The watch runs when wound, but a key is not included. Purchased in Paris. PROVENANCE: A Paris, France and Charleston SC Private Estate. J.W. Benson, clock and watchmakers, was founded by James William Benson who was born in 1826 in Reading, England and his brother Samuel Stuckley Benson. The firm is best known for its top quality watches and clocks, but also produced fine jewelry. Initially, the company produced three models of watches: the Field, the Bank and the Ludgate. All were originally made to wind with keys then re-launched as keyless models, and early examples of the key-winding models are now highly sought after. There’s also a strong market for J.W. Benson carriage and mantel clocks, of which they produced many variations during the company’s heyday in the late 19th century. Measures 2.23" / 5.67cm in diameter excluding the crown.
