Description
Greece, Hellenistic Period, probably manufactured in Canosa, ca. 323 to 30 BCE. A beautiful small pottery statue of Alexander the Great, perhaps made as a copy of a bronze statue. He stands in a dynamic pose, with one leg bent as if he is striding forward. Whatever he wears around his waist is fastened with a skull, perhaps indicating that this is a statue of Alexander depicted as Hercules (Heracles), having defeated the Nemean lion. The curled, free flowing hairstyle and youthful face are classic to depictions of Alexander. Canosa - Canusion, in antiquity - was a major center of the ceramics and pottery trade when it was a Greek polis. It produced truly unique pottery, completely different in decoration style (although not in shape) from earlier and neighboring traditions. The clay is buff, with the decoration applied directly to it without the use of slip. What would a statue like this have been used for? Based on the lines on its sides, it was clearly made in two halves from a mold, and almost certainly mass produced. Was it given as a tomb offering? Did it grace a home? We do know that people after Alexander's death throughout the Greek world sought out his likeness to give themselves legitimacy and emphasize their status in the world he created. Comes with custom stand. Size: 3.9" W x 12" H (9.9 cm x 30.5 cm)
