Item Details
Description
Indonesia, probably Bali or Java, ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved and hand-painted wooden statue depicting an Indonesian regal woman, perhaps a type inspired by the Topeng tradition, who wears a red and silver crown upon her brunette coiffure and presents an expressive visage comprised of eyes inlaid with brown shells (in their entirety and painted with black pupils), nicely contoured facial planes, a protruding nose, slightly parted pink lips revealing a toothy smile, and separately carved, attached crescent moon shaped ears. Her charming body features articulated arms and hands and a rather columnar form, painted with her v-necked robe or dress (note the nice remains of red, green, black, and silver pigments upon the surface). Though clearly minimalist in style, the artist paid great attention to details including her cinched waist accentuated by an appliqued belt buckle, the delineation of her v-neck garment and chest, her relatively naturalistic fingers, those remarkable eyes, and her flat-heeled boots/shoes. A very large and quite unusual example. Block base. Size: 8.5"L x 11.25" W x 39" H (21.6 cm x 28.6 cm x 99.1 cm); 12" W x 41.5" H (30.5 cm x 105.4 cm) including stand

While we have certainly handled many Topeng masks -- Topeng actually the Indonesian word for mask -- which is worn during the dramatic dances enacted in Bali and to a lesser extent Java that depict traditional stories of kings, princes, heroes, and myths, this full statue most likely inspired by the Topeng dramatic dance is more unusual. For a bit of context, In these dances, the entire story is performed by only four or five actors playing all the parts, both male and female. As a result, actors will have around forty masks that are only his; there is believed to be a special bond between actor and mask and that when he dons the mask, he enters a kind of trance, connected to the spiritual world. The crown of this figure suggests a royal personage, perhaps Princess Kirana whose romance with Prince Panji ensues following his attempts to find her after she is kidnapped.
