Description
Mid 19th century, 162 x 143 cm, North West Persia, Azerbaijan
In this gorgeous village rug from the Bakhshaish region, a small, oval central medallion with an azure ground encloses a star-shaped blossom. A design bar ending in a large red palmette emanates from each of the two tips of the medallion in the vertical direction. The central motif is accompanied by four stylised dragons, and the convoluted forms seen in the spandrels may also be interpreted as dragon figures. This rare example used to be in Eva Engelhardt’s private collection and was published by her in 1978. – Both ends (outer border) have been reknotted, uniform pile.
