Mid 19th century, 44 x 110 cm, North West Persia, Azerbaijan
Outstanding in palette and drawing, this mafrash side panel in the sumakh technique is a Khamseh Shahsavan weaving. The red field is largely filled by three large Memling güls placed within white octagonal surrounds; the spaces not covered by the main design are decorated with S-shaped abstract birds. Talish rosettes are lined up in a row in the white-ground border. An analogous piece was published by Azadi. – Good condition.
