Description
Gorham (American (Rhode Island), founded 1831), circa 1873. An unusual sterling silver figural knife rest modeled as a tightrope walker getting ready to walk across the rope to one end, the other end with figural holding the rope. Hallmarked to underside for Gorham with date code letter "F" and "STERLING 75". Approximate height 2.12", width 4.5", depth 1.5". Approximately 1.97 troy ounces. Provenance: Property from the Estate of Mr. John L. Roper II, Former Owner and CEO of NORSHIPCO (Norfolk Shipbuilding and Drydock Corporation), of Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Roper collected a number of fine American antiques and art including a noteworthy early American coin collection that sold at auction in 2014.
