Description
Ancient Roman Basalt Torso of Winged Victory c.2nd Century AD. Size of the Figure is 27" high x 18" wide x 12" depth. A Monumental Torso with Flowing robes and wearing high belted chiton clinging to her body revealing its form beneath. Sensation of forward striding motion. Loss of Wings except small portion as seen in images otherwise In excellent condition and on custom stand. Very heavy at 200 - 300 pounds. Ex: Estate of George, Randall, an English Gentleman, acquired in Syria before 1948. It was created to not only honor the goddess, Nike, but to honor a sea battle. It conveys a sense of action and triumph as well as portraying artful flowing drapery through its features which the Greeks considered ideal beauty.
