The Flora Danica pattern was based on illustrations from the 18th century botany book Flora Danica which illustrated plants native to Denmark. The pattern was originally commissioned in 1790 by Danish Crown Prince Frederik. The dinner set was meant as a gift for Russian Tsarina Catherine II who did not live to see its completion however, it is still used on important state occasions.

PROVENANCE: Obtained by inheritance to the current consignor; family history relates that this service was made by a relative who was a painter for Royal Copenhagen factory as a gift to commemorate the marriage of another family member.
