INDIA CARVED IVORY BOX PAINTED MINIATURE MEDALLIONS: India, c. 1880. An Indian carved ivory lidded box of rectangular form, mortise and tenon and ivory peg construction. The body with pierced panels which surround and support 8 mounted medallions protected by domed glass and silver frames which depict Mughal and other monuments. The medallions are painted in gouache with some gilding on ivory include scenes of the on the cover of the Taj Mahal in Agra and the Qutub Minar in New Delhi, Delhi. The side panels include scenes of the Red Fort in Delhi, Akbar's tomb in Sikandra, the Daulat Khana-i Khass (or Private Audience Hall) in Shahjahanabad fort, Delhi and Golden Temple at Amritsar. Company (ie Company School) style of painting and possibly from the workshop of Lala Faqir Chand. 2.25”h x 7.625”l x 3.625”d, 5.71cm x 19.36cm x 9.2cm. A similar box also attributed to the Company Style and the Lala Faqir Chand workshop can be found in the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum Ascension number: IS.2-1957.
