First Edition, Third Printing (stated), SIGNED & INSCRIBED with TYPED LETTER SIGNED. 8vo. Two color blue cloth, near fine condition in pictorial dj (tiny tear to dj at foot of spine panel). Inscribed on the front endpaper: “To Dr. Albert Shirkey with best wishes Lyndon B. Johnson.” Prologue by Howard K. Smith. Laid in, TLS to Dr. Shirkey signed by Johnson, 8vo, 1p, on LBJ letterhead, March 19, 1969, Stonewall, Texas, shortly after Johnson left office. Johnson offers his regret to learn of Dr. Shirkey being in hospital, and recalls “the time I attended the Union Thanksgiving service at Mt. Vernon Place Methodist Church.” At that service President Johnson had joined the congregation in singing the hymns, “Now Thank We All Our God” and “America the Beautiful”. Later that same day gave a Thanksgiving message to the nation calling for a “new American greatness” to emerge from the tragedy of President Kennedy’s assassination.” With envelope. Includes 1½pp copy of letter to Johnson from Dr. Shirkey thanking him for the signed copy of the book and expressing positive thoughts about Johnson’s programs and Mrs. Johnson’s beautiful Washington.
