Description
the mount's reverse is pencil identified as such in a period hand dated 1864. The New Bern location is verified by another view of the building, archived at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The UNC image is credited to O.J. Smith, Union Photograph Rooms, New Bern, claiming the scene is "on the east side of Middle Street between Pollock and South Front Street." Presented in an oval wooden frame with gold paint.
In the frame behind this image was a second photograph, being an 1860s portrait of a woman that was heavily touched up with watercolors. The mount is imprinted by the Petersburg, Virginia gallery of E. J. Rees, probably the brother of noted Richmond Civil War photographer Charles R. Rees.
Image 7 1/8 x 5.25 in. (oval); DOA 12.75 x 14.75 in.
