2 volumes in large folio (530x368 mm), contemporary mottled calf on marbled boards with crimson label and gilt title at spine, gilt decorations. COMPLETE WITH ALL THE 124 LARGE MAPS WITH THEIR CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLORING, each measuring 1060x736 mm.
FIRST EDITION OF SANTINI’S UNIVERSAL ATLAS, THE LARGEST ATLAS PRINTED IN ITALY IN 18TH CENTURY. THE MAPS REALIZED BY SANTINI ARE KEPT FROM THE MAIN ARTISTS AND ENGRAVERS OF HIS TIME: D’Anville, Bellin, Bonne, Janvier, Robert de Vaugondy, Rizzi-Zannoni, Homann and others.
CONTENT OF THE TWO VOLUMES:
FIRST VOLUME: Engraved allegorical title-page, 60 double page maps.
SECOND VOLUME: Engraved allegorical title-page, 64 double page maps, including the extra map (not quoted in the Table) containing Gibraltar.
Provenance: Private Library of a noble family descendant from Venetian Patritiate, Treviso.
Bibliographical References: Phillips, Atlases, 647 (quoting Remondini’s edition of 1784).
