PROVENANCE:
Clars Auction Gallery, April 10, 2010 Lot 428. San Francisco private collection.NOTES: Dario Villalba is an important Spanish modern artist. Since the middle of the 1960’s he has integrated photography, canvas, and paint to make unique works that defy exact classification in modern and contemporary vanguard art movements. He uses photographic trauma, cold and distancing, as a vehicle for transmitting attitudes or states of mind. During the 1980s, his process became progressively more complicated, expressing a formal self-analysis and introspection. Andy Warhol was a friend of Villalba and collaborated with him on a number of works.
MUSEUMS: The Spanish Museum of Modern Art, Madrid; Museum des Beaux-Arts, Switzerland; The Louvre, Paris; Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, Spain; The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of the Vatican, Rome; Collection of the Chase Manhattan Bank, New York; The Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, San Francisco. Dario Villalba was elected a member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Fine Arts and awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts by the King of Spain, both in 2002.
