Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Monte Alban, ca. 600 to 900 CE. This is a lovely grey ware pottery urn depicting a seated deity. He wears large disc ear ornaments, a pectoral with a figural pendant in his lap, and a decorated loincloth. Red remains of pigment made from cinnabar are still clearly visible. Zapotec pottery is energetic and unforgettable; one of their most lasting legacies is their funerary urns. This Zapotec urn with its unique headdress is much like a similar example illustrated in Frank Boos' The Ceramic Sculpture of Ancient Oaxaca (1966). Size: 7" H (17.8 cm)
