Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin, ca. 400 to 200 BCE. A beautiful brownware stirrup spout vessel of a handsome form with a flat bottomed, globular body, and a thin-walled, slightly flaring stirrup rising from the gently swelling upper end of the vessel, surmounted by a spout with concave sides and a thin rim. The rounded orb-like body is finely incised with a ten-pointed star, perhaps representing the sun as sun worship was quite prevalent in ancient Andean civilizations, occupying a significant place in mythology and ritual. In fact, by the time of the Inca, rulers were believed to be an incarnation of the sun god, Inti. Size: 6.125" in diameter x 9.375" H (15.6 cm x 23.8 cm)
