View of the small barrel factory at 464 Chestnut Street in Nashville, Tennessee, John Henry Whitehouse, president, W.S. Page the manager. There is a large horse-drawn cart loaded with barrels in front of the factory, also a small carriage, and several men. Three of the men are white, four apparently African American - one of the African Americans is in a barrel, possibly placed there in an attempt at humor or at least a demonstration of subservience. Another African American stands behind him, and the other two are at the reins of the horse-drawn conveyances. The Whitehouse Barrel Co. did much of the flour milling cooperage in the Nashville flour milling center of Tennessee.
