"Keppel returned to the China Station in 1847, and was appointed to convey Sir James Brooke to Labuan, an island off Borneo. At Brooke's suggestion, Labuan was ceded to Great Britain in 1846 by the Sultan of Brunei; it was made a crown colony, and Brooke was named governor. Keppel's book treats of the voyage to Labuan, incidents there, piracy in the South China Sea, and gives a description of Manila." - Hill. Abbey Travel, 550; Hill, 920. Moderate dampstain to top margins of volume 2, lighly intruding into images; pp. 53 and 53 of volume 2 adereed together at bottom gutter causing a margina tear; map with old rubberstamp of Bradford Library, top left corner missing just affecting outer neat line, a few spots; last 2 leaves of volume 1 detached; overall very good.
