Savain was a lawyer, writer and artist who earned a degree at the Haitian School of Agronomy. While living in New York in the early 1940s he studied several techniques including wood sculpture, tempera painting and fresco both at the Art Student's league and with master artists (winning a bronze medal at the 1940 World's Fair).
