Gino Severini (1883-1966)
Born in Cortona, Gino Severini went to Rome in 1899 in order to attend evening classes in painting at the Villa Medici. In Rome he met the artists Umberto Boccioni and Balla Giaccomo, who gave him an understanding of the neo-impressionistic color divisionism. In 1906 Severini moved to Paris, where he met many artists and poets. In 1910 Severini joint the futurist movement and created in this style works of great originality. From 1914 he turned more to Cubism, expressing the hectic dynamism of modern life. After a rather neoclassical creative phase Severini returned to Cubism in the 1920s, which he refined decoratively. Severini published many papers on art and received the Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1950. (cbo)
