PAVLOVA ANNA: (1881-1931) Russian Prima Ballerina. Vintage signed postcard photograph, an appealing image of Pavlova standing in a full length pose wearing an elaborate, traditional costume, including a kokoshnik, for her Russian Dance. Signed in bold, dark fountain pen ink with her name alone across the image. A holograph note, in the hand of the original owner of the signed photograph, appears to the verso and states, in part, 'Went…to "The [Victoria] Palace" Shaftesbury Ave. on May 26th 1911. When the Victoria Palace theatre in London opened in 1911, at the time the present photograph was signed, a gilded statue of Pavlova was installed above the cupola of the theatre. This was theatre owner Alfred Butt's homage to the dancer he had spectacularly introduced to London.
