Description
PAVLOVA ANNA: (1881-1931) Russian Prima Ballerina. Vintage signed postcard photograph, an appealing image of Pavlova standing in a full length pose wearing an elaborate, traditional costume, including a kokoshnik, for her Russian Dance. Signed in bold, dark fountain pen ink with her name alone across the image. A holograph note, in the hand of the original owner of the signed photograph, appears to the verso and states, in part, 'Went…to "The [Victoria] Palace" Shaftesbury Ave. on May 26th 1911. Saw the Russian Dancers including the artiste on the other side who danced wonderfully, the "Dying Swan" dance being particularly fine'. About EX
When the Victoria Palace theatre in London opened in 1911, at the time the present photograph was signed, a gilded statue of Pavlova was installed above the cupola of the theatre. This was theatre owner Alfred Butt's homage to the dancer he had spectacularly introduced to London.
