F. Schuyler Mathews (1854-1938) was an artist and composer by training and amateur naturalist. Prior to recording invention, bird sounds and phonetics were transcribed by hand. He wrote the first field guide to bird songs in 1904 by observing the birds in the woods at his Campton, New Hampshire home, and translated the bird songs into musical notes. Author of nature books for children and adults.
