Description
English or Irish, fourth quarter 18th century. A fine cut glass multi-arm sweetmeat epergne candelabrum having a central "sweetmeat pole" with swirl and diamond point shaped finial with petal-cut bobeche hung with faceted prisms over a diamond point stem, with two tiers of notched scrolling arms; the upper tier issuing a candlecup with a Vandyke-collared rim to each side with petal cut bobeche hung with faceted prisms, the lower tier with four dishes in navette form, also with Vandyke-collared rims and diamond point pattern used to hold jellies, nuts, crystallized fruit, the polished brass circulet mounted to the paneled and fluted circular base. Approximate height 18", width 17". Provenance: From the Private Collection of the Owner of Chelsea House.
Condition
Cut glass pole finial glued into the brass/gilt metal holder. Diamond point stem on pole with chips at the very top - likely from contact to the metal (see image #6). Oxidation and finish loss to gilt metal/brass. Sweetmeat arms and dishes are secured to holders with museum putty. One sweetmeat dish with loss to Vandyke- collar. The cup it is resting in also broken and secured with putty. Museum putty also around base likely to prevent movement on table top.
