The following excerpt is from a Poughkeepsie Journal article from Oct. 32, 2012: “The large industrial factory, built in 1874 at 8 N. Cherry St. in the City of Poughkeepsie, housed various operations throughout its existence. The building, originally occupied by William S. Patten’s Poughkeepsie Live Oak Leather Manufactory, was transformed several times to accommodate a cooperage, a paper mill, and its most well-known business, the Poughkeepsie Underwear Factory. In 1887, when the factory was used by the Dutchess Manufacturing Co., the three-story structure was expanded, almost doubling its size. “Dutchess Manufacturing produced skirts, overalls and coats until finally specializing in making only their famous ‘Dutchess trousers,’ tough and affordable pants for working men, advertised nationwide with the catchy guarantee ‘ten cents a button, one dollar a rip,’ ” said local historian Holly Wahlberg. “By 1888, the company outgrew the building and moved to larger quarters on Crannell Street.””.
