Item Details
Description
Latin America, Mexico, ca. early 20th century CE. A hand carved wooden festival mask depicting a colorful lizard painstakingly painted in hues of red, white, and blue. The visage is expecially expressive, in particuar, those dramatic eyes, so blue and theatrically outlined in white with openwork as well to allow the wearer to see. Then there is that long, sloping snout and toothy grin with four protruding fangs comprised of cactus fibers, two on each end of his threatening grimace. Beyond this, the mask shows signs of use with nice patina. Size: 8.5" L x 5.75" W x 5.25" H (21.6 cm x 14.6 cm x 13.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Nick Poolos, Chicago, IL acquired before 1970.
