151. MATTHEW F. MAURY (1806-1873). Commander CSN, the foremost oceanographer of his time known as the "Pathfinder of the Sea." The superintendent of the Naval Observatory before the Civil War, he resigned in 1861 to enter the Confederacy. ALS, 1p, 5"x7¼", Washington, DC, May 12, 1855. Writing from the "Observatory" to J. S. Furlong in New York acknowledging receipt of his "friendly note. Pray excuse the delay & believe me Yours truly M. F. Maury..." Darkly penned and signed.
