Item Details
Description
Pair of Civil War Related Handwritten & Signed Letters (ALS) from a farmer named Ben[jamin] Chains, Jr. (see biographical below) to his children. Each letter is written in Script / Cursive on light blue stationary, and is rich in content regarding the beginning of the Civil War.1. Letter to children dated Jan. 8, 186[1]* informing them that the Mississippi State Convention was in session and would likely vote for succession of Mississippi from Union. “I suppose that our state will in a few days be out of the Union, as SouthCarolina had done, I am in hopes that we will have a peaceable division of our union and avoid the calamity of war.” Age related wear including insect holes and minor toning - neither of which interfere with the letter's contents. Approx. 8" x 5". *Letter was dated incorrectly as 1860 instead of 1861.2. Letter to children dated April 15th, 1861 discussing crucial Civil War related developments. “We have just heard that Fort Sumpter has been taken by the Confederates, they have from account acted well and nobly. I fear now we will have a general war. We shall have hard times if we do, but we will whip the Northerners soundly if they force us to do so.”Also discusses that the father sent the children to a boarding school in Benmettsville, SC to keep them safe. The girls school was likely the The Female Academy located in the Jennings Brown House (built in 1826) that later was used as the headquarters for Union troops in 1865. The Female Academy used the oldest part of the building from 1833 to 1881 when it was located on East Main Street opposite the First United Methodist Church. It was moved in 1977 to its present location. Age related wear including insect holes and minor toning - neither of which interfere with the letter's contents. Approx. 8" x 5".On August 10, 1861, after these letters were written, Joseph Ben Chains (1841-1892) enlisted in the CSA military - Co. F 27 Miss. Inf - CSA. He was captured at the Battle of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee on Nov. 24, 1863, and remained a POW till the end of war.
