Item Details
Description
Two Georgian Sterling Silver Sideboard Plates, both hallmarked London, one 1783-1784 by (probably) William Pitts, the other 1811-1812 by Richard Cook, each of circular form with wavy rim, decorated with a flowering fruit-plant in the center and banding the rim, dia. 9-1/4", 23.94 total t. oz.
Condition
Overall Condition: Good. The 1783/84 example has a split where the rim meets the bowl, running about 4" along the perimeter. Otherwise, both plates have no condition issues beyond the expected bumps, scuffs and dings commensurate with age. Both plates retain traces of gilding in the recesses, indicating that they were, at one time, at least parcel-gilt. The later plate is of significantly heavier gauge than the earlier. Both are appropriately hallmarked on the underside of the rim. The marks on the earlier plate are lightly rubbed, with the maker's mark partially struck; the marks on the later plate are clean and clear.
