Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788) was a French naturalist, mathematician, cosmologist, and encyclopediste. Buffon worked on Histoire Naturelle for 50 years and published 36 quarto volumes during his lifetime; with additional volumes based on his notes and further research being published in the two decades following his death. It has been said that “Truly, Buffon was the father of all thought in natural history in the second half of the 18th century”.
Copper Engraving is the practice of incising a design onto copper by cutting grooves into it. An impression is created on the copper plate, which is then filled with opaque ink. When paper is pressed into the plate, it creates raised and colored areas.
