Description
Plan of the city of Tripoli in Barbary, attacked by the French Royal Navy, commanded by Marshal d'Estr ées Vice Admiral of France, June 22, 1685.
1685 etching illustrates the French bombardment of Tripoli in June 22 - 24, 1685 under the command of Vice-Admiral D'Estrees. After three days of bombardment, the locals agreed to a peace which involved the payment of 500,000 livres for damages caused by the pirates, release of all French slaves, and political concessions.
In 17th Century, Tripoli was one of the base locations for the Barbary Pirates. Several European expeditions were undertaken against this stronghold.
