Description
This is a very old and elegant example of the Bamana marionette tradition. In the Bamana society, such large scale marionettes were used as social tools, educating young men and woman on tribal customs, offering instruction and experience in contemplating and actualizing critical beliefs and values within their communities. Such powerful sculptures would lend a sense of honor to community and tradition. when such dramatic theater was performed, and it was integral to the well being of the community. Carved wood with hand hammered brass sheeting covering most of the sculptures face, as well as some decorative elements throughout. Custom mounted to a wooden display stand. Measures 31 inches tall.
Condition
Well weathered and worn, some erosion to top of sculpture and obvious wear and handling. In Good solid / fair condition.
