Description
Near East, Mesopotamian, Babylonian or Sumerian, ca. 2200 to 1550 BCE. A mold-made pottery relief plaque depicting a male figure dressed in long, flowing robes, walking forward as if in a procession, holding a deer, perhaps a sacrificial offering to a deity, in his arms. Impressive attention to detail. Plaques like this example are one of the best ways for historians and archaeologists to learn about the belief systems and cultural practices of ancient Mesopotamians.
