Description
Venetian Carved Gilt Wood Side Chair with Oval Mirrored Back, 19th C., Provenance: Property of Amy Greene, wife of photographer Milton Greene. NOTE: Per Ms. Greene, during the London filming of "A Prince and a Showgirl" (1957) Sir Laurence Olivier, Amy and Milton Greene were antique shopping in Oxford, England. The chair was described to Sir Laurence as a traveling gypsy chair, a multi purpose piece used for both the dressing and makeup application process that went into a show. While in London, Sir Laurence gifted the chair to Marilyn as a surprise having it delivered directly to her dressing room. Marilyn stated the chair was lovely, however she refused to accept the gift based upon her projected disapproval of husband Arthur Miller, stating " I simply couldn't accept this gift from Sir Laurence, Arthur would have a fit, there would be hell to pay", at which point Marilyn decided to regift the chair to Amy Greene.
