Description
Magna Graecia, South Italy, Apulian, ca. 340 to 320 BCE. A stunning terracotta thymiaterion (incense burner) in red-figure w/ fugitive white and yellow paint, decorated on the columnar upper shaft w/ a striated pattern superimposed by a band of sinuous wave motifs, the lower section w/ a Lady of Fashion adorned w/ beaded necklace, radiate stephane and sakkos, the other side w/ a palmette and tendrils, the foot w/ a band of S motifs, the footed bowl above w/ a band of wave on the rim and a stylized rosette in the tondo. Size: 8" H (20.3 cm)
Similar examples may be found in elite museum collections such as the Getty Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Note, a similar example sold at Christie's New York (4 June 2015 - lot 66) for $4,000. Another sold five years earlier at Christie's London (29 April 2010 - lot 199) for $1,898.
