Description
Central Asia, modern day Turkmenistan, probably Yomud, but maybe Chodor peoples, ca. late 19th century CE. A section of a tent band, made of hand-knotted wool pile in bright red, cornflower blue, black, and cream, on a simple woven background. The iconography includes three flowers near the top, a maze-like linear pattern, and three flowers above that; in a register above them are three six-sided, abstract figures above a simple linear border. The entire pattern is within a double border. Size: 14.45" W x 25" H (36.7 cm x 63.5 cm)
Woven tent bands are crucial components of trellis tents, which the nomads who have lived in the region for 1500 years use as their homes. Bands wrap around the lower part of the wooden roof struts, providing the tension necessary to brace the roof dome and support the tent as strong winds roar across the steppes. These bands are made by Turkmen women, woven in one piece on a narrow, horizontal loom placed on the ground outside the tent. A single band can take up to three years to complete. In complete form (this is a fragment), one can often "read" a story through the abstract iconography.
