Shin-Hanga was an art movement in early 20th century in Japan, which is often described as "Neo-Ukiyoe" since it revitalised traditional ukiyoe from the Edo and Meiji period. It is often said that Shin-Hanga prints contain much of the ukiyoe tradition in terms of subject matters, at the same time, they also emphasise vastly different techniques and sensibilities. Hasui Kawase was one of Shin-Hanga artists in late 19th and early 20th century. Hasui mainly worked on landscapes and townscapes based on his sketches in Tokyo and from his trips throughout Japan. Unlike meisho (famous places, which was a popular subject of earlier ukiyoe artists) prints, Hasui's prints mostly feature urbanising Japanese cities. In this print, he depicted Otemon Gate at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. The gate was built in 1620 as a main gate of the Edo Castle. It was suffered from the Great Fire and several earthquakes, but reconstructed each time. It still is one of main gates of the Imperial Palace, and used by the visitors to have an access to the East Garden.

Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) was a Japanese artist and printmaker who would become a prominent figure in the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement of the early 20th century. This movement was influenced by European Impressionism and its imagery focused on landscapes, women, and nature.

Shin-hanga was an art movement in early 20th-century Japan, during the Taisho and Showa periods, that revitalized traditional ukiyo-e art rooted in the Edo and Meiji periods.
