BUFFALO CHINA CHESAPEAKE AND OHIO RAILROAD CERAMIC PLATE, having a narrow embossed gilt rim, embossed gilt cavetto, and a central polychrome portrait medallion of George Washington. Marked "BUFFALO / CHINA / LUNE / LAMELLE", hand painted gilt "1732 - BI-CENTENNIAL 1932.", and scratched "1900" on base. Buffalo, New York. Circa 1932. 10 11/16" D.
Undamaged with scuffs to central portrait and some wear to interior gilding.
Provenance: From the collection of the late Phillip M. Sullivan.
Catalogue Note: The C & O began operation of their "George Washington" train in 1932 in correspondence with the bicentennial of George Washington's birth, creating a series of inaugural wares customers and for the train line. The connection of George Washington with a train line was the development of the James River Company by George Washington in 1785 and the connection of eastern and western Virginia.
